Elliot Handler, who along with his wife Ruth and friend Harold Matson founded Mattel, the world's largest toy company, passed away in Los Angeles on July 21 at age 95. Although Mr. Handler had not been affiliated with the giant California-based manufacturer for many years, he was always remembered as co-creator of the toy industry's best- and longest-selling brands " Barbie and Hot Wheels.In 1945 under the name Mattel Creations, Mr. Handler and his partners began their business career not with toys, as might be expected, but rather building picture frames and later wooden doll houses.
