Mattel Co-founder Created Iconic Brands

Elliot Handler, who along with his wife Ruth and friend Harold Matson founded Mattel, the world's largest toy company, passed away in Los Angeles on July 21 at age 95. Although Mr. Handler had not been affiliated with the giant California-based manufacturer for many years, he was always remembered as co-creator of the toy industry's best- and longest-selling brands " Barbie and Hot Wheels.In 1945 under the name Mattel Creations, Mr. Handler and his partners began their business career not with toys, as might be expected, but rather building picture frames and later wooden doll houses. DHS Diecast Open House Continues In Berea Until 5 P.m. Today

The England-born die cast collector just left DHS Diecast in Berea to head home to Caledonia, Ontario, Canada."This is my 10th year coming to the Open House here," said Robson, who works in a Canadian quarry. "I have 1,100, make that 1,110, models. I've been collecting them for 25 years."The Open House continues until 5 p.m. today.
