Reflection Of The Past
Among the broad spectrum of autos at the Pontiac-Oakland Museum and Resource Center sits the "Tin Indian," a never-beaten 1966 GTO 389 that has traveled an unusual road to earn a place of pride at the museum.Obviously a show car now, with its pristine white paint and gleaming gold lettering and chrome accents - it was once a working dragster owned by Bill Knafel of Akron, Ohio, and considered the "winningest Pontiac in drag racing history," according to a Knaful website.The dragster, driven by National Hot Rod Association Hall of Fame inductee Arlen Vanke, won 27 championships in its maiden year, including the NASCAR Winter Nationals in Daytona, Fla.,
